best practices for FONTS

March 15th, 2010
  • A user that has visited my site said that the fonts looked awful. It turns out he was on a really old PC that didn't have OCR A Extended (font). But what I don't understand is that the fonts were in static text boxes. Shouldn't static text boxes embed the fonts so that all users can see them?

What is the best way to make sure that all site visitors see the intended font?

  • Or maybe he just recognized that OCR A Extended is a bloody awful font.

    (sorry I couldnt' help myself)

  • Static text boxes should include those fonts - perhaps they were accidentally made dynamic? Or, he might have been on a very hi-res or very low-res monitor which will effect the way they're displayed. There's a number of ways to use fonts, for anything dynamic, you definitely want to embed the fonts in the textField - another option is to add the fonts to your library - or create a shared library w/ the fonts. With fonts in the library, you can add linkage identifiers and then set fonts at run time via CSS - but if you have them set to export on first frame, you may experience some heavy upfront load time before your preloader kicks in. Just some things to be aware of. Not sure what "best practice" would be, depends on how small you want your swf, and how you'll be using content within your site.

  • at least it wasn't comic sans =)
